Ratu Kalinyamat is a leader and warrior from Jepara. Its existence in fighting for Indonesian sovereignty through maritime cannot be underestimated.
His figure is highly respected in his homeland, Jepara, along with two other warrior figures, namely RA Kartini and Ratu Shima.
Traces of the History of Queen Kalinyamat
Queen Kalinayamat is the daughter of the King of Demak, Sultan Trenggana. Her real name is Ratna Kencana. He is known as a tough figure and one of the maritime figures in Indonesia.
Queen Kalinyamat married a man from outside Java who later received the title Prince Hadiri.
This pair led Jepara until one day Prince Hadiri was killed by Arya Penangsang’s envoy.
Queen Kalinyamat then continued to rule Jepara as regent alone and succeeded in making Jepara a strong region from a maritime perspective.
Queen Kalinyamat’s role in fighting the invaders cannot be doubted. This tough woman repeatedly went to war to repel the Portuguese.
History states that Queen Kalinyamat fought the Portuguese in Malacca and Maluku four times, namely:
In 1551 Queen Kalinyamat and Johor attacked the Portuguese by sending troops to Malacca. In 1564-1565 Queen Kalinyamat sent reinforcements to Hitu to save her troops. In 1568 Queen Kalinyamat sent troops to fight in Malacca. 1568 was the last time Queen Kalinyamat sent troops to Malacca to fight against the Portuguese.
His heroic actions against colonialism were so inspiring that now his services deserve to be appreciated by receiving the title of National Hero.
Apart from that, there is still one other service that can still be remembered from the figure of Queen Kalinyamat. He is one of the figures who played an important role in introducing the typical Jepara carving art.
When Prince Hadiri still ruled Jepara, his adoptive father, Tjie Hwio Gwan, had the opportunity to become governor with the title Sungging Badar Duwung.
He is also the one who later taught the art of carving to his people until now Jepara is very famous for the art of carving which is famous even abroad.
Queen Kalinyamat also founded the Mantingan mosque in 1559 and traces of the history of her carving art can still be seen in the tomb of Queen Kalinyamat at the Mantingan Mosque.
