Horrifying facts were revealed during the 2023 MotoGP event. According to media reports in Germany, as many as 68 percent of racers who competed in the premier class suffered physical injuries.
One of the most memorable is of course the accident that happened to Francesco Bagnaia at the Catalunya GP. At that time, the 2023 MotoGP world champion fell in the middle of the track and his leg was crushed by a Red Bull KTM motorbike.
According to the Speedweek report released on Wednesday (20/12/2023), there were 358 accidents recorded in the official 2023 MotoGP class accident statistics. On average, 17.9 incidents occurred per series at each weekend.
Referring to this, there was an increase in the number of accidents compared to the previous year. In MotoGP 2022, an average of 16.7 accidents occur per series in the MotoGP class.
However, at least the number of accidents that occur throughout the 2023 season has decreased compared to the first half of this season. In the first five series alone, with the new sprint race format, an average of 22.8 accidents occurred per MotoGP weekend.
However, there has never been a single race in MotoGP 2023 where there were 22 regular racers on the starting line. There are always riders who suffer injuries and are forced to miss the race.
Speedweek concluded that 15 of the 22 regular racers, aka two-thirds or 68.18 percent of racers, experienced physical injuries in MotoGP 2023, where nine racers (40.91 percent) missed at least one race last season.
The following is a long list of racer accidents and injuries in MotoGP 2023:
