In a video message released on Thursday (9/11) at the International Humanitarian Conference for the Civilian Population in Gaza, United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres reiterated his condemnation of the “abhorrent acts of terror” committed by Hamas against Israel.
In questions reported by the UN, Guterres also called for the unconditional release of all hostages
“We must take action to help and protect civilians in Gaza. “That means an immediate humanitarian ceasefire,” Guterres said.
Although some aid is starting to flow to Gaza, “it’s just a drop in the ocean” because the needs are so great, Guterres said, urging the international community to increase aid and protection.
Guterres said that means ensuring full respect for international humanitarian law, protecting hospitals, UN facilities, shelters and schools. This means unrestricted, secure and sustainable access to bring in and distribute supplies at a much greater scale, volume and frequency – including fuel.
“And that means investing in the $1.2 billion humanitarian aid appeal that the UN just launched to help the people of Gaza,” Guterres said.
The United States (US) called for a “humanitarian pause.” Many Council members demanded a “humanitarian ceasefire.”
The number of Palestinians killed in the besieged Gaza Strip has surged beyond 10,000. Most of them are women and children. (lt)
