A series of Israeli airstrikes on Tuesday (31/10) leveled apartment buildings in the Jabaliya refugee camp near Gaza City. Video footage showed rescue teams pulling out a number of men, women and children from the rubble of the apartment.
Israel said the strikes destroyed Hamas command centers set up in civilian homes and a network of tunnels beneath them.
The number of victims as a result of the attack on the Jabaliya camp is not yet known for certain.
The Israeli military said a large number of militants were killed, including commanders who oversaw Hamas operations in northern Gaza.
The director of the Indonesian hospital where the victim was treated, Dr. Atef Al-Kahlot, said hundreds of people were injured or killed as a result of the attack, but he did not give an exact figure.
Statements from both parties could not be independently confirmed.
Images from the scene showed at least four large craters in what were once buildings, and debris surrounded partially collapsed buildings.
Dozens of rescue workers and local residents were seen digging through the rubble, trying to find survivors under the rubble of the building. (ka/rs)
