Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD said that the Constitutional Court’s decision regarding the age limit for presidential and vice presidential candidates is final and binding. Mahfud asked all parties to be ready and respect whatever the MK decides.
“Now I hope this doesn’t become a reason to postpone the election. Everyone must be ready to participate in the election based on the MK’s decision. “Even though we don’t like the decision, our constitution says the Constitutional Court’s decision is final, so let’s continue this process,” said Mahfud on Monday (16/10).
Previously, the Constitutional Court decided to grant a judicial review of Law Number 7 of 2017 concerning Elections. In its decision, the MK stated that regional heads who are elected through elections based on popular sovereignty can participate in the presidential election.
The Constitutional Court stated that the president and vice president, governors, regents and mayors are included in the family of executive positions. However, there are differences in determining the minimum age limits for these positions.

That’s why in its decision the Constitutional Court added the phrase ‘has previously held or is currently occupying a position elected through general elections, including regional head elections, as a condition for participating in presidential elections.
