China has banned central government officials from using iPhones for work.
They are also not allowed to bring it to the office.
That’s according to the Wall Street Journal, which cited people familiar with the matter.
The orders have reportedly been given in recent weeks, but it is unclear how widely they have been implemented.
There was no immediate response from Chinese officials or Apple.
If true, the new move would mark an escalation in US-China tensions, which often focus on technology.
Washington has imposed strict controls on exports of cutting-edge chips to China, while Beijing has restricted deliveries from companies such as Boeing.
This is also not the first time China has banned foreign technology it deems suspicious.
In 2021, several officials were reportedly banned from driving Tesla cars into government compounds and other sensitive facilities.
China’s security services are concerned that the many cameras installed in the car could be used for espionage. (ab/lt)
